Lobby Display

Art Installation

During a major renovation to an old multi-storey heritage building on Spadina, large hemlock timbers were removed from the raised loading dock, and an old cast boiler was found in the basement.  We were tasked with using these two relics to create a display element for the main building lobby.  The result is an accordion like separation of the boiler pieces, framing each with re-purposed wood timbers, and separating them with threaded rod through existing holes in the boiler pieces.  The wood maintains the aged look on two edges and is planed to expose the raw wood below on the other two edges.  Lighting was added within the display to reference the existing 1960’s custom light fixture hanging above in the lobby.

This work is a play on contradiction and how uses can change over time:  A functional boiler and timbers becomes a purely aesthetic element; aged rugged century old exterior wood has been cleaned and refined for a building interior; and the holes once used to bolt together the boiler parts are used to hold the pieces apart.
